How wide is the scope for mobility equipment?

It is difficult to cover the scope of all the differing types of mobility equipment available on the market. The term ‘mobility equipment’ covers a multitude of different aids to mobility, all of which are designed for a different end use, but all are designed to give the user more personal freedom and independence.

As a for instance, a person who has lost the use of their legs for one reason or another, will need a different mobility aid than one who just has difficulty walking. Difficulty walking may be due to injury or illness and affects individuals in differing ways and of course severity.
For individuals who are unable to walk or get out and about because of their condition, a wheel chair is the ideal piece of equipment to offer increased mobility and personal freedom. There are many different types of wheelchair depending upon the level of disability or physical impairment the person is subject to. In order to obtain the best possible advice and to get the most functionality from any wheel chair, it is always worthwhile speaking to someone who understands the practicalities and can offer advice suited to the needs of the individual.
If the individual is able to walk but at the same time has difficulty in supporting themselves, or needs a little extra help it could be a walking stick or walking frame that could be the answer to increased mobility. As with wheel chairs there is a massive range of differing needs equipment available.
Walking frames which have built in shelves and/or baskets are ideal for aiding independence especially when shopping. It is not always easy carrying heavy shopping bags or baskets, even for able bodied individuals, but with the aid of a walking frame supported on wheels, there is no problem in managing what is after all an essential chore.
Walking sticks offer a measure of support where walking is difficult but not restricted too much. This may be because the individual has suffered injury and is in need of temporary support, or where long term injury causes discomfort or pain when walking.

There are many reasons why individuals are unable to get out and about without the need of mobility support; however, just as this is so there are many aids to mobility all of which offer freedom of movement and independence which might otherwise be lost.
